Unified Communications Overview
The CIO, at the request of the IT Governance Council’s Infrastructure & Security Committee, has initiated a project to assess the unified communications needs of the campus. The current service offerings do not provide an integrated experience resulting in using multiple separate tools to instant message, email, and video /dial-in conference. A unified communications platform will reduce the number of separate applications needed (client-side) to use the multiple channels (IM, Video) of modern electronic communications. The UC platform will also have the capability to seamlessly move between communication channels during a conversation, providing clients with more flexibility and less configuration of separate software. For example a casual conversation over Instant Message could then be upgraded to a group IM or video conferencing in the same interface seamlessly. Additional functionality, like presence, becomes available when a unified communications platform is adopted.
This project is considered “investigative” and will look at multiple scenarios.
