Current Strategic Plan

An IT Strategic Planning Process was initiated to review the campus IT services and focused on five critical areas: 1) ACCC operations, 2) communications services, 3) data networks, 4) server infrastructure and services, and 5) storage infrastructure and services. Implementation of the IT Strategic Plan has begun, and a summary of the major findings is below:

Areas of Agreement

  • Establishing common sets of technologies to maintain consistency across technologies managed by ACCC and by distributed IT groups
  • Maintaining reliable technologies to ensure consistent access to technology resources for UIC faculty, staff, and students
  • Developing campus-wide policies and standards governing data security and integration of new technologies
  • Reducing duplication of IT staff effort through consolidation of commodity services and server virtualization
  • Improving efficiency of IT staff including distributed IT staff through formal training on complex technologies
  • Increasing collaboration among ACCC and distributed IT staff to promote consistency across technologies, sharing of expertise, and shared management of services

Highlights from Distributed/Decentralized/Edge IT

  • An estimated 30 distributed email systems are in operation
  • At least nine different web conferencing services, six different collaboration tools, and ten different content management systems are in use
  • An estimated 350 physical servers and 360 virtual servers are being managed locally with many servers supporting commodity services such as file services, database services, and web hosting. Because many servers are managed by faculty and staff outside of IT groups, the number of servers identified in the survey is likely to be substantially understated
  • Spaces housing local servers vary in terms of physical security, environmental conditions, and access control
  • Local IT units support more than 700 terabytes of storage and 42% of these units indicated that stored data includes sensitive data such as Personal Identify Information (PII) and Personal Health Information (PHI)
  • Faculty and staff store data in multiple locations including local drives, external drives, local file servers, ACCC file servers, and a variety of cloud-based storage services
